National Maritime Day Proclamations by Mayors

City of Sequim [Washington] Proclamation

Whereas, in peace and in conflict, ships and seafarers have held a special place in our Nation's history and in the history and the present culture of the City of Sequim;

Whereas, we as a people and as a nation owe a debt of gratitude to all who have served up; and

Whereas, during World War II more that 250,000 members of the American Merchant Marine served their Country, with more that 6,700 giving their lives, hundreds being detained as prisoners of war and over 800 ships being sunk or damaged while providing every imaginable range of supplies to the troops; and

Whereas, on May 22, 1819, the American steam vessel, SS Savannah, sailed from Savannah, GA to Liverpool, England, commencing the first successful crossing of the Atlantic Ocean using steam propulsion; and

Whereas, by a joint Congressional Resolution passed in 1933, May 22nd was designated as National Maritime Day.

Now, therefore be it resolved, by the City Council of the City of Sequim, in consideration of the above finding of fact May 22, 2001 is hereby proclaimed

National Maritime Day

in the City of Sequim and the City Council urges all citizens to join them in recognizing, honoring and appreciating members of the American Merchant Marine.

Witness my hand and the seal of the City
of Sequim this 9th day of April 2001
