Ungrateful Government

President Franklin Roosevelt signs GI Bill 1944As he signed the GI Bill in June 1944 (photo at right), President Roosevelt said:

"I trust Congress will soon provide similar opportunities to members of the merchant marine who have risked their lives time and time again during war for the welfare of their country."

In 1943, an official study showed mariners' annual pay was equal to that of servicemen. Lack of benefits created great financial loss for mariners.
